Broken Composers: multimedia art and electronic music

Broken Composers is the artist duo of Kirill Rave and Vitali Yu. Their work brings together physical objects, optical projection, live performance and electronic music.

Kirill Rave and Vitali Yu create light and sound installations, audiovisual performances and electronic music as Broken Composers.

From generative sound to spatial works

The duo began with Broken Rooms at the 2017 Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art. Field recordings passed through a network of random generators; at the exhibition opening the artists began performing alongside the evolving composition.

Later works use different relationships between sound, light and the body. Visitors move through the landscape of Laser Meadows, interrupt a laser plane in Umbra, or encounter screens and reflections in PSR J1032–5804. The individual case pages describe these different mechanisms rather than treating all installations as one technology.

Installations, performances and recordings

A work can have an installation version, a live presentation and a related music release. Each has its own context and date. The project archive links to the associated recordings; the Music catalogue links back to the works.

The music includes ambient compositions for installations as well as dance-oriented electronic releases and tracks with vocals. Live Shows documents the instruments, optical projections and performance formats.
