Visitors beneath red laser beams in the Academy courtyard

Light and sound installations by Broken Composers

Broken Composers’ light installations use optical projection, reflective structures and sound to change the visitor’s experience of a space. Each work has a distinct physical arrangement and audience relationship.

Laser Meadows, Aftercolor, Solid Revolver, Umbra and PSR J1032–5804: documented works with different relationships between light, sound and the audience.

Landscape and architecture

Laser Meadows invites visitors to walk through a landscape crossed by Laser Lumia patterns and music. Aftercolor places a red circle above the courtyard of the Academy of Arts before breaking its stable form into moving laser fragments.

Solid Revolver surrounds visitors with a rotating cloud of light inside a cylindrical structure. Visitors can experience the light from outside the structure, from within it and at its centre.

Movement and perception

In Umbra, objects interrupting a laser plane trigger musical notes. PSR J1032–5804 combines mirrored modules, screen imagery and music developed from reprocessed pulsar signals. Explore the individual works below for their sound, physical arrangement and documented presentations.
