Public multimedia art sculpture

PSR J1032–5804

Zaryadye Park / City of Light Festival, Moscow

2024

PSR J1032−5804 is a ten-metre multimedia sculpture that looks like a digital glitch torn out of a screen and placed in physical space. Its angular structure, music, and screen imagery are developed from reworked radio signals associated with an unusual pulsar. As visitors move around it, reflective panels mix distorted live camera imagery with the surrounding city.

A Glitch in Reality

PSR J1032−5804 is a ten-metre multimedia sculpture that functions as a glitch in reality. Its jagged, torn forms resemble digital processing errors and artefacts — not on a screen, but in physical space.

The structure, music, and imagery on the screens are based on reprocessed radio signals from the pulsar that gives the work its name. The signals contain rhythm, bursts, and noise, which we work into the sculpture's broken geometry, music, and flickering visuals. The connection between order and malfunction echoes our name and our artistic method.

Reflections and Viewpoints

The installation has no fixed appearance. It changes with the viewpoint, the time of day, and the observer's position. Screens arranged among triangular mirrored panels display camera images of the surrounding reality. Their images flicker and distort with the music, mixing with reflections of the sky, trees, buildings, passers-by, and traffic.

Sound and Image

Radio-signal data were transformed into material for the music and the screen graphics. The accompanying PSR J1032−5804 release on Bandcamp contains four tracks: PSR, J10, 32-5, and 804.

Music for the work

PSR J1032-5804 · original release artwork

Four pieces developed from radio-signal material connected to the pulsar PSR J1032−5804. The recordings accompany Broken Composers' sculpture, translating pulses, noise, and irregular bursts into an electronic composition.
